Understanding Days of Being Wild (1990) | Life Goes On

What do I mean by saying life goes on?

Wong Kar Wai’s 2nd feature film Days Of Being Wild is a story about 3 individuals as they all come across each other one way or another.

From them falling in love, breaking up, and to having intimate conversations. They all interact with each other, no matter how big or small the interactions may be.

So you would think that the story of these three people all coexisting together would affect their outcomes.

But it doesn’t.

Because this movie about 3 people at this current point in their life isn’t really the story being told. The true story is what happens after the movie finishes.

Because Days Of Being Wild tells the tale of how even though you may feel like the main character, such as these three, in actual fact - no one is because in the end life goes on.

Life does not stand still when the story we watch is over. And I’m not just talking about the movie but this is also true in real life.

We all feel like we are the main character of our own story. That the problems and issues we have to deal with are just obstacles for us to overcome so that we eventually become the hero of our own story.

Some people call this a hero complex or the protagonist theory but to some degree it does feel true.

That we are the Luke Skywalker of this world and everyone around us is just side characters to help us through our journey.

But even though we want to be the hero, wanting to believe that our true purpose in life is fulfilled. When our story ends, purpose fulfilled or not, life moves on from us.

Because life is not a movie, there is no three act structure or a hero’s story arc. Life is just a journey, and it’s a journey that everyone takes. Not just you.

And Days Of Being Wild emphasises that ideal by how this movie plays out.

There are three characters that feel like the main character of this story. At first you believe it could be Li-zhen, the concession girl, then it quickly switches to Yuddy, a rich boy who lives life without a care, then finally you believe it could be Tide, a policeman looking to become a sailor.
