Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 (2023) Movie Review

James Gunn’s third installment of the Guardians movies is one that was very needed for not only the Marvel Cinematic Universe but also for the superhero genre in general.

Because we hear a lot when a superhero movie flops that it is down to a fatigue in the genre and that people no longer care about the MCU or DCEU.

Well, what this movie shows us is that people care about good movies. Superhero or not, audiences just want to go watch a well made film and what we have received so far from Marvel and DC is below par films that even if they weren’t connected to a popular IP would still flop because they are just not very good.

Guardians three is a solid movie that has actual characters you care about and writing that is funny and emotional.

A story about saving Rocket Racoon opens the door into his past. A traumatic past that will leave you with a teary eye and now see the character in a new perspective. That hard shell he has cultivated is created by heartbreak.

But Rocket is not the only character that gets a spotlight, each Guardian comes to terms with who they are and what they have been running away from.

James Gunn created a movie with a lot of heart. It’s not just about the grand scheme of the MCU and the next villains. It’s a movie driven by characters not selling you another movie.

One criticism I would say about this movie is the emotional whiplash you get because one minute you are watching a heart wrenching scene and the next some 80s pop song immediately takes you into a lighter mood.

A really entertaining third installment that incorporates all the team and gives them their spotlight - Drax being the best however.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 deserves a 7.8 out of 10.
